Let’s talk about the beaches—because they are something straight out of a postcard! Jill and I have been pretty fortunate and we have seen some pretty beaches around the world. We can easily say that St. John is blessed with dozens of the best beaches in the world. To be honest. We can handle dipping into our inner beach bum attitudes for a while. After all, Eric pretty much lives on “beach time” all the time anyway. Our point is, though, out of all the pretty/peaceful/romantic beaches the ones on St. John are among the very best!

Sixty percent of the island is within the border of the Virgin Islands National Park. So, that means that vast swaths of St. John are protected! That goes for the forest, the beaches, and the waters offshore. So, that means when you are standing in the crystal, and I mean crystal clear water. Which let me say for just a moment, the water is gentle, calm, bath water warm and you will be mesmerized by the mixture of blue hues of the ocean. You won’t be able to not notice some of the prettiest mixtures of blues you will ever see. All the while, as you hold your loved one close, as you two look around, you will see pristine hills covered by Caribbean Forest. Pristine, beautiful, forested mountains that go down to soft sandy beaches. What you don’t see are houses, resorts, busy roads, or, imagine, lots of people. Yes, you can have a beach to yourself at times. It’s amazing! Just you, your newly made spouse, and some of the best Caribbean sites you can see.
Beaches such as Trunk Bay, with its powdery sand and turquoise waters, are among the most famous (and most photographed) spots on the island.
Cinnamon Bay Beach is wonderful if you’re looking for something more private. We have had it to ourselves several times later in the afternoon. The water is shallow and clear. The beach twists and wraps itself around the most beautiful bay. We have literally floated and waded around in the water there all day. Never getting tired of it and feeling just about as relaxed as one can be.
Honeymoon Beach and Maho Bay offer equally stunning scenery and a more relaxed and intimate feel. I could easily write a book describing the various beaches, bays, and Kays. (Actually, I will note it to myself.) However, for now, let me recommend just one more. It is a hidden gem. Oppenheimer Beach, sometimes called Gibney Beach. Now, you have to get lucky with this one. The universe must align, and it will just mean that you were meant to go there on that day because there are literally only three parking spaces available here. Otherwise, the only way to get there is by boat. Oppenheimer Beach is peaceful, off the beaten path, and gorgeous.
Adventure and Romance
St. John has plenty to offer if you and your partner love relaxing and having a little adventure, too. Take a scenic hike on the Reef Bay Trail, where you’ll find lush jungle landscapes, waterfalls, and ancient petroglyphs. Snorkeling in the clear waters of Frances or Hawksnest Beach is another must—imagine swimming hand in hand while spotting colorful tropical fish (think Finding Nemo) and sea turtles!
And let’s not forget a romantic boat excursion! A private sunset sail or a day trip to the nearby British Virgin Islands is a fantastic way to add a little luxury and excitement to your honeymoon experience.
